Still in Maryborough, we went into town to check out the city center, first port of call was the courthouse. The whole surrounding area is littered with historic buildings and landmarks. On chatting with the local Justice of the Peace, we found his knowledge of the area informative and interesting. At one time their were 46 operating pubs in the main city (now reduced to about 7). This was the drop off point for migrants before being sent to Brisbane in the late 1800's. The would be then dock has since been reclaimed and now provides beautifully manicured gardens and points of interest.
An old steam engine (I think it was a cane train) takes visitors for a short ride around the gardens and was a fun way to explore. I once had a kerosene donkey engine that looked very similar and the old chaps that ran the train were very enthusiastic - old world in the signals used and manner in which they conducted the engine.
