Being raised in Victoria I knew of Portland but unfortunately not much about it. To our delight we found it to be historical, inviting and a place that's booming in trade and tourism. Today we went to see the Australian Fur Seals on a great watercraft owned and operated by Portland Harbour Tours. A wonderful and knowledgeable crew who left us delighted!

On our return to port the skipper took us on a slight diversion so we could see where the sand is pumped from the dredge and a look at the water tower lookout.

Regaining our land legs we drove one of the recommended circuits to Cape Nelson Lighthouse with great views of the surroundings. A popular surfing area due to powerful surf with close access to the giant
wind towers providing electricity to the area.

Natures own Bonsai growing on a cliff near the lighthouse!

The architecture over looking the busy port is proudly preserved and the locals were happy to explain that the port has its own alumina smelter using about 1/3 of Victoria"s power and the mountains of wood chips are exported to china for conversion to paper products whilst the logs arrive at the same destination for production of plywood. Also wheat and barley are exported internationally.
